Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment
Trusted pain management doctors in Kenya at Orthobridge Institute offer platelet-rich plasma therapy to not only relieve pain
but also to complete healing.
Restoring motion faster with Platelet Rich Plasma Injections
In the last few years, there has been a lot of research on platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections and at Orthobridge Orthopedic Centre in Kenya, we’re proud to offer this advanced form of treatment.
The majority of patient injuries we see are treated with a combination of physical therapy, medication, and surgery.
However, platelet rich plasma injections have been credited with helping patients return to active status more quickly. As a result, we administer PRP injections as a complementary treatment option.
Our blood consists of a liquid component known as plasma. It also consists of three main solid components which include the red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets. Platelets play an important role in forming blood clots.
They also consist of special proteins, known as growth factors, which help with our body’s healing process.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a component of blood that has been enriched with platelets above their normal concentration. Also known as thrombocytes, platelets contain special growth factors that promote the healing of injured tissues in the body.
Platelets are easily extracted from the patient’s own blood and can be safely re-injected into injured areas to stimulate tissue repair.
The blood is then injected back into the site of the injury to speed up recovery.
Injuries treated with platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections
The effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma injections varies based on the area of the injury, overall health of the patient, and whether the injury is acute (sudden) or chronic (developing over time).
Platelet-rich plasma injections have shown promise in a number of orthopedic injuries including:
- Chronic tendon injuries
- Acute muscle and ligament injuries
- Rotator cuff injuries
- Tendonitis
- SLAP tears and labral tears
- Bursitis
- Arthritis
- Meniscus Injuries
- Cartilage injury
Although the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma injections is still being researched, such treatment is very promising.
If you are in the process of recovering from surgery or an injury and are interested in platelet-rich plasma injections, we encourage you to request an appointment or call 0701-794-697, so we can determine whether you’re a candidate for the treatment.
How does PRP heal the body?
The body’s first response to soft tissue injury is to deliver platelet cells. Packed with growth and healing factors, platelets initiate repair and attract the critical assistance of stem cells.
PRP’s natural healing process intensifies the body’s efforts by delivering a higher concentration of platelets directly into the area in need.
To create PRP, a small sample of your blood is drawn (similar to a lab test sample) and placed in a centrifuge that spins the blood at high speeds, separating the platelets from the other components.
The PRP is then injected into and around the point of injury. When additional platelets and regenerative proteins are introduced into the damaged tissue, the rate of healing and cellular repair is increased.
Beyond its regenerative potential, PRP has been demonstrated to have strong anti-inflammatory properties. The anti-inflammatory benefits not only help damaged tendons to heal but can reduce the inflammation associated with early joint arthritis.
When combined with viscosupplementation, PRP has the potential to provide sustained relief of joint pain in patients with mild early joint arthritis and degeneration.
Because your own blood is used, there is no risk of a transmissible infection and a low risk of an allergic reaction.
