When should I see an orthopedic specialist?
Patients might need to visit an orthopedic specialist if they have:
- Joint or musculoskeletal pain that began after an injury.
- Gradually progressive joint pain that is worse with weight-bearing.
- Joint pain that is severe and interfering with function.
How do I prepare for an orthopedic appointment?
If this is your first visit to an orthopedist, what can you expect? Here is how you can prepare for your orthopedic appointment.
- Arrive prepared- Like with any other initial appointment with a medical professional, you will need to bring a photo ID, and a referral if you were referred by another physician.
- Bring your medications – Your orthopedist is going to want to know what you are taking, and in what doses.
- Physical therapy reports – Oftentimes you will have seen a physical therapist before you see the orthopedist, especially if you have been treated by your primary care doctor before you were referred.
- Bring medical documentation.
- Bring a list of any questions you may have to ask your specialist.
What happens during a first orthopedic appointment?
Your first orthopedic appointment will most likely include a comprehensive medical history evaluation, diagnostic imaging (X-rays and/or MRI), and physical tests.
What does an orthopedic exam consist of?
During an orthopedic exam or assessment, your doctor will observe your general ability to move around while walking, sitting, standing, climbing stairs, bending forward and backward, and performing other basic movements.
These tests help the orthopedic surgeon rule out or confirm possible diagnoses.
Do all orthopedic conditions require surgery?
Most patients can be effectively treated with physical therapy and other non-operative modalities; other patients may require surgery.
At Orthobridge Orthopedics Centre, we believe in a conservative-first approach to care. We employ non-surgical treatment options such as rest, medication, and exercise.
If your condition does not respond to conservative therapies, we can consider additional treatment options that may include minimally invasive procedures or surgery.
