Conservative Orthopedic Treatment
Orthopedic care and treatment at Orthobridge Institute follow a holistic approach, exploring conservative methods when possible.
Conservative Treatment Options to Relieve Pain
Many musculoskeletal conditions and injuries can be rehabilitated using conservative treatments, allowing the body to heal itself.
Conservative treatment involves the use of non-invasive procedures, that do not involve surgery.
At Orthobridge Orthopedics Centre, we work with the mindset that surgery should be more of a last resort.
Our team of orthopedic surgeons are experts in pain management and rehabilitation and can offer the best possible treatment option for all musculoskeletal or neuromuscular ailments.
There are a variety of conservative treatment options that may be used to treat injury, disease, or irritation of joints, bones, muscles, and other tissues of the body.
Please read more about some of our conservative treatment options at Orthobridge Institute.
Some Conservative Treatment Options
The experts at Orthobridge Institute, an orthopedic center in Kenya offer conservative approaches such as:
1. Physical Therapy
Physical therapy plays an important role in the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal pain.
Therapy ranges from passive modalities (such as heat, ice, and electrical stimulation) to active treatments such as stabilization and strengthening exercises.
After an acute injury, the physical therapist will often use modalities to decrease inflammation and muscle spasms and promote tissue healing.
After the initial passive therapy, an active rehabilitation program is important to provide stabilization and strengthening of the injured area.
The physical therapist works with your physician to develop a specific program for joint mobility and an individualized exercise program.
2. Injections
Specific injections are utilized to deliver medication to a specific area of the joint that will assist in reducing or eliminating the pain caused by inflammation to the nerves and surrounding joints.
Injections may not completely eliminate all severe orthopedic pain symptoms, be it immediately or permanently, but can serve to significantly aid in pain reduction allowing increased comfort and function with activities of daily living.
The purpose of joint injections are two-fold: to diagnose the source of a patient’s pain, and to provide therapeutic pain relief.
Other conservative treatment options include:
- Exercise
- Activity modification
- Bracing, splints, or other supports
When is surgery considered?
For your safety: Certain medical situations simply require surgery as the most responsible approach to care, and when not doing surgery puts you at higher risk.
If your condition and your safety make surgery the best option, we will be frank and straightforward with you, and explain why your specific situation is best handled with surgery.
When conservative measures are no longer effective: There may come a point where a condition, such as arthritis, advances to a stage where it no longer responds to conservative treatment the way it used to, and surgery is the best next step.
