What is Ankle Arthroscopy?

Ankle arthroscopy is a surgery that uses a tiny camera and surgical tools to examine or repair the tissues inside or around your ankle.

The camera is called an arthroscope. The procedure allows the doctor to detect problems and make repairs to your ankle without making larger cuts in the skin and tissue.

Ankle arthroscopy is performed for the surgical evaluation and treatment of a variety of ankle conditions.

Arthroscopic surgery can have a quicker recovery time than traditional open surgery. This means that you may have less pain and recover more quickly than open surgery.

Ankle Arthroscopy Procedure & Benefits

Ankle arthroscopy can be performed by an orthopedic surgeon in a hospital or outpatient facility under a light general or local anesthetic.

After making two pinhole incisions, the surgeon inserts a small camera into one of these openings to better view the damaged ankle while operating on it through the other incisions.

The actual procedure will vary depending on the nature and extent of the damage, but it may include repairing or debriding damaged cartilage, repairing torn ligaments, or even replacing the damaged ligament with a graft taken from the patient or a donor.

Ankle arthroscopy makes possible direct visualization of the inside of the ankle without large cosmetically unsightly scars.

It minimizes other problems encountered with large incisions around the ankle, such as pain, bleeding, wound breakdown, and infection.

The procedure can be performed as an outpatient because of its minimally invasive nature. Patients may be able to begin rehabilitation sooner, rehabilitate more functionally, and return to high level activities, such as sports.

Who needs ankle arthroscopy surgery?

Your orthopedic surgeon will perform a physical exam prior to surgery to determine if arthroscopy is a beneficial course of treatment. X-rays or other imaging studies may also be conducted prior to surgery.

While many patients with injured ankles respond favorably to conservative treatments, other cases are best treated with arthroscopic surgery.

Arthroscopic surgery is often recommended for patients with the following ankle conditions:

  • Ankle pain: Arthroscopy allows the surgeon to explore what is causing your ankle pain.
  • Ligament tears: A ligament is a band of tissue that connects bone to bone. Several ligaments in the ankle help keep it stable and allow it to move. Torn ligaments can be repaired with this type of surgery.
  • Ankle impingement: Tissues in your ankle can become swollen and sore from overuse. This makes it hard to move the joint.
Arthroscopy can remove the tissue so you can move your joint.
  • Scar tissue: This can form after an injury to the ankle. This surgery can remove scar tissue.
  • Arthritis: Arthroscopy can be used to help reduce pain and improve movement.
  • Cartilage injuries: This surgery can be used to diagnose or repair cartilage and bone injuries.
  • Loose fragments: These are pieces of bone or cartilage inside the ankle that can cause the joint to lock up.
During arthroscopy, these fragments can be removed.

Ankle Arthroscopy Recovery & Recovery Time

While rehabilitation plans differ from patient to patient, all surgically repaired ankles should be rested, iced, and elevated for at least a week after the procedure. Following the procedure, patients will go home with a removable boot or brace.

Depending on what is repaired, you may be able to walk with full weight-bearing, or with crutches until the ankle can bear weight.

The tiny incisions are covered for two days, and then a detailed physical therapy program begins under the surgeon’s direction.

Recovery timelines for ankle injuries vary. While some patients will be ready to return to work within several days of the procedure, most patients will need to rest for one to two weeks before resuming their usual activities.

Similarly, athletes will need to refrain from training or exercising for four to six weeks. Patients requiring more involved reconstructions may also need a few months for a complete recovery.
